The Deer Who Likes Beer

A deer is fed a bottle of beer at a resort in Weihai, northern China’s Shandong province.

According to Zhang Xiangxi, who works as a waitress at the resort’s restaurant, she discovered the deer’s unusual tastes last November when she was cleaning up after some customers.

She says: “I saw a bottle of beer was still half full so I playfully passed it to the deer. Unexpectedly it bit the bottle and raised its head and drank all the beer in one shot.”

Since then, says Zhang, whenever there is any leftover beer she takes it to feed to the deer.

She comments: “It has a growing addiction to beer. To begin with it was half a bottle but now it is several big bottles in a row. Her daily feed is around two bottles of beer.”

Zhang adds: “I don’t know what her maximum appetite for beers is though we once tried giving her four bottles of beer and she drank them all!”

Deep-fried beer on its way

A chef in the US claims to have come up with the world's first recipe for deep-fried beer!

The beer is put in a pocket of pretzel-like dough and then fried in oil at 375 degrees Celsius for about 20 seconds, Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

When one takes a bite, the hot beer mixes with the dough giving a delicious taste sensation.

Mark Zable toiled over his recipe for three years and a patent for the process is pending.

"Nobody has been able to fry a liquid before. It tastes like you took a bite of hot pretzel dough and then took a drink of beer," Zable was quoted as saying.

The deep-fried beer will be unveiled in a fried food competition at the Texas state fair later this month and the Texas Alcoholic Commission has stated that those who want to try it out have to be over 21 years.

Zable has come up with dishes like chocolate-covered strawberry waffle balls and jalapeño corndog shrimps.

Some of the regions most exciting bands play at Lochrann’s Inaugural Oysterfest

	SATURDAY, SEPT 25, 2010

	LOCHRANN'S IRISH PUB & EATERY

	(6195 MAIN STREET)

	2 STAGES. 19 BANDS. ALL AGES. DOORS 10 A.M.

Six months ago, Spune teamed up with Frisco’s Wellhouse Co and the good people at Lochrann's Irish Pub & Eatery to produce a Thursday night live music series. The goal was to brand the Lochrann's stage as a live music destination for cutting-edge local music in Frisco, which could eventually develop Main Street as an entertainment and arts district. After a great response, Spune started booking Friday nights too. In a continued effort to provide quality entertainment in the Frisco area, we've taken it a step further. What better way to build upon this momentum, than a music festival centered around what Lochrann's does so well, excellent food and drink!

"We love celebrating the Irish heritage at Lochrann's. Whether it's through our food, sharing a great pint with friends, or our live entertainment. We hope to bring a little piece of Ireland to you. September is always an exciting month for us being an Irish Pub. We have halfway to St. Pat's on Sept. 17th, Smithwick's Anniversary, and oysters coming into season. It was the perfect time to introduce Oysterfest" - Deina McNabb, owner of Lochrann's.

This year, however, Lochrann's was not so sure it would be a September to remember. There was fear that the recent oil spill in the gulf would force them to take oysters off the menu resulting in an Oyster "less" Fest.

"Luckily, we found another fresh oyster supplier. Knowing that our local fishermen in the Gulf were losing business, and potentially losing their livelihood, our plans for the festival really hit home. We wanted to do something to help so we hooked up with Gulf Aid – an organization with the mission to aid gulf fishermen, their families and the future of the wetlands. We're happy to allocate a portion of ticket sales to this great organization." (Deina McNabb, Lochrann's)

THE MUSIC: Lochrann's Inaugural Oysterfest won't be without all of the bells and whistles! With both an indoor and outdoor stage, we are expecting a great crowd. The event will start at 11am and go throughout the day to give everyone time to enjoy fresh oysters, great pints, and listen to fantastic regional, national and international bands! Live music will continue up to 1am.

Matthew Harber - of Frisco based Wellhouse Co - said, "this festival was the clear next step in continuing to build an active live music culture in and around Main St. Frisco. The Thursday and Friday program we are a part of at Lochrann's created such groundswell of local excitement that we needed to respond to the interest. As we do not yet have a space such as the Granada to host shows in the 1,000+ range we decided to collaborate to create an event outdoors. From here we will continue our efforts to eventually build several venues in close proximity to the inaugural Oysterfest site."

Viking Festival to Educate, Enlighten & Entertain Community

The popular Magnus Barelegs Viking Festival, now in its tenth year will take place on the 12th to the 18th of September in Killyleagh. The festival is recognised as the best of its kind and teams travel from as far as America to enter the Viking Longboat races on the Sunday. The Magnus Barelegs Festival is supported by Down District Council.

To kick start the festival Killyleagh social partnership will be holding a ‘bag’ auction to raise funds to run the successful festival and ensure its growth in future years. The auction will take place on the 10th of September at 7.30pm, venue to be confirmed so keep an eye in the local press and on www.killyleagh.org for further information. The auction will showcase designed 16” x 14” canvas bags by amateur and professional artists alike with paintings by the distinctive and individual Leo Casement, Lisa Catherwood and Alan Quigley on display. “This is a one off opportunity to buy quality art canvas at very affordable prices which not only exhibit established artists but local amateur artists too. It is an important, educational and fun fund raiser for the event” said Tracey Davies, treasurer of the KSP. “We would ask people to come along and support us on 10th, it promises to be a great night. Also if people have items they would like to donate for the auction, and the ballot, our other fund raiser, please contact me on 028 4482 1448.”

A number of old favourites are returning to Killyleagh for this year’s Magnus Barelegs Festival. One of the highlights of the September 12th event is the traditional long boat races at the town’s harbour which are preceded by a spectacular and colourful parade which will pass through the town commencing at 1pm. This year it will be led by Harley Davidson’s, street entertainers and local cross community bands who are sure to highly entertain the community.

Killyleagh Social Partnership are also looking for teams to compete for the four coveted trophies in the Viking long ship race. The categories include: Fastest time, Mixed Team, Ladies Team and Charity Shield. If you are interested please contact us on the details below.

Previous charities that have benefited from the proceeds raised during the traditional long ship races include Christian Aid, St. John Ambulance, Men Against Cancer, Mi’Lop Tapang, St. John’s Church Sunday School, Tiny Life, Marie Curie, Make A Wish, Macmillan, and Killyleagh’s Cross Drop-In Centre. Long Boat teams decide who they would like to support and are encouraged to collect sponsorship for their chosen charity or cause.

From Wednesday 15th – Friday 17th September the Viking festival will host 3 school education days where local children have an opportunity to experience Viking life through living history demonstrations and re-enactments. The education days will be led by the Magnus Viking association and will take place in the Viking Village at Delamont Country Park, Killyleagh.

On Saturday 18th the focus will switch to Delamont where the day has been re-organised. “Favourites such as the battle, the long bowmen and the funeral procession remain” said Philip Campbell of the Magnus Viking association. But we have some new and exciting Viking events. Members of the public will be able to get up close and personal with two of the MVA’s Viking long boats. The boats will be on static display in the grounds of Delamont Country Park during the living history display on Sat the 18th, along with a display of birds of pray, costume making workshops by Down Community Arts, jumping clay and children’s arts and crafts. This year more emphasis has been focused on making the festival more interactive and memorable.

This year’s 10th anniversary festival is not to be missed, the Best Viking Festival in Ireland and the only one outside Norway that can celebrate a local character!

Dublin’s Downtown Soft Opening Set for This Week

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — “We are Black Irish,” quickly quipped Mark Moss, one of the two African-American brothers who have been in the Irish bar business for a few years. Both have undoubtedly used the punchline countless times.

Mark and his brother Ernest once ran Dublin’s in West Hollywood before moving the concept to Downtown Los Angeles’ Fine Arts Building. The Moss brothers will have a soft opening Tuesday, or, if some last minute details come together, the doors can open for business as early as Monday.

Whichever day they open, Dublin’s will be the second Irish-themed bar, only a few blocks away from Casey’s Irish Pub on Grand, north of Wilshire.

Dublin’s will be open from 11am to 2am, and a full menu will served until 10pm when the kitchen will switch over to a modified late-night menu. The interior highlights the architectural details and high ceilings, and the bar is equipped with HD monitors for watching sports.

7th street has finally begun to take shape as the "Restaurant Row" that backers have touted it to be. Now we get to find out whether Downtown can work two Irish pubs into a busy nightlife schedule.

Bay Area Craft Beer Festival brewing in Martinez

Just in time for Oktoberfest season, craft beer will be the starring act at a new event held at 330 Ferry Street, one of the Zocchi buildings.

After attending the 2010 Monterey Beer Festival in June, Main Street Martinez director Leanne Peterson thought it would be a great idea to host a similar event in Martinez.

“I’ve been actively trying to recruit a microbrewery to come to Martinez, and we’ve worked with four so far,” Peterson said Thursday, adding that two are in serious negotiations with the City. “There’s an association between craft beers and brick buildings, older towns. It was a natural fit.”

The problem with brewpubs, said Peterson, is that they require a lot of room, and then there are the recently publicized problems with expensive sewer hookup to the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District.

However, Peterson said the management at Central San indicated to MSM Board president John Curtis that if a brewery operator can commit to recycling a large portion of used ingredients to local farmers, there might not be any fees incurred.

“The brewery has to work with Central San [on that issue], but it can happen,” said Peterson.

Since her husband is a home brewer and she has a lot of contacts in the craft beer industry, Peterson went to work organizing an event in Martinez to highlight its suitability as a brewpub destination.

After pitching the idea to the City of using one of the vacant Zocchi property buildings as a venue for the one-day event, Peterson said she began rounding up several of the top microbreweries to participate in the event.

“Join us in the Historic Cannery District at the picturesque Martinez Waterfront Park, located at 333 Ferry St.,” coaxes the event website.

The Bay Area Craft Beer Festival will take place on Oct. 23 from 1 to 5 p.m., or 12 to 5 p.m. if attendees purchase one of the VIP tickets.

Live bands will perform for an anticipated crowd of 2000, and food booths will sell various vittles.

“We’re offering free shuttle service from the North Concord BART station, and I’ll be advertising wherever the [Capitol Corridor] trains go so people can take the train from Sacramento or Oakland [to the festival],” said Peterson.

While plans are still being hammered out, Peterson said she estimates at least 30 craft beer makers will participate.

Interested breweries can visit the website http://bayareacraftbeerfestival.com to download the necessary forms. Those interested in volunteering for the festival are encouraged to call 228-3577 for more information.

Attendees from out of town can also take advantage of a special offered by the John Muir Best Western Inn for $59 a night that weekend.

Tickets are selling for $50 for the VIP Access and $35 for general admission, and Peterson said she expects the event to sell out.

Full-Calorie Beer Has a Link to Psoriasis

A new study has found a surprising link between beer drinking in women and psoriasis, the autoimmune disease characterized by itchy, scaly skin.

The researchers reported that women who had five or more full-calorie beers a week (but not those who drank light beer or other liquor) were at almost twice the risk for psoriasis.

Beer is usually made from barley, and the starch used to ferment it contains glutens, which have been linked to psoriasis, said the study’s lead author, Dr. Abrar A. Qureshi, an assistant professor of dermatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Legbiter Runners to take to the Streets in Killyleagh this weekend!

This coming Friday evening, 27th August, the roads of Killyleagh will see many runners from a number of clubs, schools and simply local enthusiasts compete in the town’s annual running event. The Legbiter 5 mile challenge, aptly named by its sponsor Strangford Lough Brewing Company.

Last year the event had over 150 entries into the Legbiter Five Mile and schools challenge and organisers are hoping to welcome many new and returning runners to Killyleagh to compete for the 2010 titles.

Both the adult 'Legbiter Five Mile' and 'school challenge' events will start at the top of High Street and circuit the town. Registration for schools starts at 5.30pm and the five mile challenge registrations begin at 6pm.

The school challenge race begins at 6.30pm and local schools will compete against each other for the prestigious Junior and Senior Challenge Cups. The challenge requires 3 or more children from one school to enter the race and the fastest three times across the finish line in a better time than entrants from other schools will win the junior and senior schools cups. There is no maximum number of entrants per school, but the fastest three completed times will be counted to represent that school, (so be sure to encourage your class mates to run with you.)

The school challenge circuit takes runners around the centre of Killyleagh town and finishes with a very challenging hill climb. Last year Cumran Primary School took the Junior title home and Down High School won the Senior title.

Individual winners in the 6-11 and 12-16 age groups also take home a prize and last year Paul McMeekin from Downpatrick Primary School and Jack Walker from Grosvenor Grammar School were the overall winners in their age categories.

The Legbiter 5 mile challenge begins at 7.30pm, again from the top of High Street. Competitors in the Legbiter event leave the town and travel along a scenic route feathering open countryside and the shores of Strangford Lough before they return to the town centre. Last year saw over 110 entrants in the Legbiter race and it is hoped that many will return to compete for the title in the 2010 event.

There are 4 categories in the Legbiter event – Overall male winner, overall female winner, male veteran and female veteran. Last year the overall male winner was Alan McCullough who crossed the line in 25 minutes and 48 seconds. The winner of the Male Veteran category was Francis Marsh who finished the circuit in 26 minutes and 42 seconds. The overall female winner and winner of the female veteran category was Diane Wilson who crossed the line in 35 minutes and 12 seconds.

Early registration is recommended either at the Bridge Centre in Killyleagh from 6.30pm or by emailing Grace Lavery and Tracey Davies at info@slbc.ie with your name, date of birth and the class you wish to enter.

The organisers of both the Schools cup and Legbiter challenge events say they are delighted with the support provided by the Killyleagh Social Partnership and sponsorship provided by the Strangford Lough Brewing Company.

Should you be drinking your beer out of a different glass?

We pored over Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune’s book The Naked Pint to discover the science behind matching beer to glass.

	1. Mug
Bottoms up! These won’t do much for the flavor of your beer—they’re just for fun—but are best for the lightest, simplest brews. The shape isn’t designed for much quality control, so beers tend to lose carbonation a bit faster. The same goes for pitchers.

	2. Tulip
Check out those curves! They’re there to lock in carbonation: The bulbous bottom and narrow center create a bottleneck that keeps bubbles from escaping too fast. It’s perfect for drinks like scotch ales and double or imperial IPAs, which can taste intense once their fizz fades.

	3. Pint
This traditional beer-glass shape boosts the flavor of heavier styles like porters, stouts, IPAs and American lagers. The small bottom and large opening funnel carbonation out of the glass, and the bubble loss helps the rich, toasted notes stand out. The stemless design lets beer warm up a bit in your hands, and that also amps up taste.

	4. Chalice or goblet
Just as a strong wine releases subtler flavors when decanted, heavy sipping beers like belgian ales reveal their depth if they’re allowed to open up. These glass styles have wide mouths, which help fizz dissipate so you’re able to focus on taste. The stem keeps warm fingers off the glass to keep the slow-sip beer colder longer.

	5. Weizen
These tall, skinny glasses turn a beer pour into a pageant. They’re made to show off dense, golden beers like hefeweizens and American wheats. The long length lets fewer bubbles escape, so beer develops a huge, fluffy head. The thin walls reveal color and let beer warm up quicker, releasing the strong hops and yeast so subtler notes, like orange and clove, can come through.

America’s Biggest Irish Festival celebrates 30 years

The biggest Irish festival in America the Milwaukee, Irish Fest -- which runs Aug. 19-22 at Henry Maier Festival Park at the lakefront -- is celebrating 30 years this year.

For three decades, Milwaukee's Irish festival has featured top Irish talent and there is a serious commitment to real Irish culture, with Gaelic poetry readings, theater events, historical displays, book sales and more.

A theme this year will be the Irish peace process and several representatives from Northern Ireland will be on hand to discuss the great success for a process that ended over 30 years of conflict.

Among this year's entertainers are Liz Carroll, Cherish the Ladies, Gaelic Storm, Tommy Sands, The Makem & Spain Brothers and Red Hot Chili Pipers, to name but a few.

What fuels such success and such a diverse event? Martin Hintz -- of the Irish American Post and author of "Celebrate the Legend: 25 Years of Milwaukee Irish Fest" -- knows.

"The fest is all about people," he told OnMilwaukee.com when the book was published.

"It is an extended family, with everyone celebrating weddings, births, deaths. ... Irish Fest is a team effort brought together by hard-working friends, many of whom have spent years as volunteers.

"Some sing low, some sing high on the Irish Fest wire, to paraphrase the old song, but through it all, there is a tight bond ... and all their efforts accomplished so much. Hey, families have fun, they laugh, they cry, they moan, they goof around, they celebrate."

There's a wonderful feel to Irish Fest and after 30 years they have clearly mastered how to keep the crowds happy.

One of the best and most respected ethnic festivals in Milwaukee, Irish Fest -- which runs Aug. 19-22 at Henry Maier Festival Park at the lakefront -- is one of the only ones with a real international reputation. And this year, it celebrates its 30th birthday.

For three decades, Milwaukee's Irish festival has booked the same talent you'd see at a similar event in the Emerald Isle, and there is a serious devotion to culture, with Gaelic poetry readings, theater events, historical displays, book sales and more.

There's a celebratory feel to Irish Fest; one really does get the sense of being among friends; at an over-sized family picnic, perhaps. And there's a lot to see, from the exhibition of cuddly Irish dogs to the cultural and musical events. That allows visitors to mix and match and create their own experience and their own memories.

The Great Lakes Feis hosted more than just dancing Sunday.

Crowds wandered through the Lansing Center, eager to hear traditional instruments and music, watch artists create and craft with Irish themes and smell the aromas of Irish breads and baked goods.According to organizers, a feis (pronounced "fesh") comes from the Gaelic word "festival" and they wanted their event to impress on those attending the full import of such an Irish gathering. The dancers still performed reels, jigs and traditional dances worthy of a St. Patrick's Day parade.

CHARLOTTE - The spirit of Ireland came alive in uptown Charlotte at this year's Irish Summer Festival this weekend.

Hundreds gathered at the corner of Third and Tryon streets for Saturday's festivities which features Irish music, dancing, food and a Gaelic football expedition.

"It's all about passing on culture to the next generation or the grandchildren and stuff like that," said Rick Sainz, a vendor at the festival.

The annual event raises money for Camp Care which supports child cancer patients.
