The list of Ireland’s richest people are out and to no one’s surprise the big losers are developers and speculators. Gone is Ireland’s richest man for many years, Sean Quinn, once worth $10 billion now bankrupt.

Top of the list is Dublin-born Hillary Weston married to Canadian billionaire Galen Weston who have a combined wealth of over $13 billion. The only criteria was that people have Irish citizenship or residency.

In second place is mobile phone entrepreneur Denis O’Brien of Digicell at an estimated $5 billion.

Here's Irish Centrals choice for the top ten music festivals in Ireland

By BERNIE MALONE, IrishCentral.com Staff Writer

The Irish have a great 'gra' (love) for music, partying and gathering together to enjoy each-other's company. That's probably why music festivals have become such a huge part of the summer in Ireland and there's a huge variety to chose from.

From the more literary Galway Arts Festival to the hipster and urban Forbidden Fruit, from the blow out massive 90,000 person festival Oxegen to the more boutique mellow festival of Cois Fharraige you're sure to find the festival that fits you in Ireland this summer.

Here's our choice for the top ten music festivals in Ireland in 2011 and a sample of some of the music you just might hear.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, strolled incognito around Dublin streets at the weekend, unlike the two high profile visitors Queen Elizabeth and Barack Obama who recently visited Ireland.

Zuckerberg was dressed in a dark green hoodie and strolled from his hotel the Dylan on Baggott street to Stephen’s Green taking in the sights on the way.

He was on his iPhone most of the walk and passers by showed no recognition that one of the greatest entrepreneur in the history of the web was walking by.

Two Viking homes unearthed in Temple Bar district

	By KATE HICKEY, IrishCentral.com Editor

Builders have discovered a small Viking settlement under Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. The settlement was located on what was an island in the River Poddle.

In March the CEO of the Temple Bar Cultural Trust, Dermot McLaughlin, announced via video blog that a "medieval, timber structure" had been found.

Two weeks ago the Viking homes were discovered during excavations. Experts believe that this settlement dates from the 10th or 11th century when the small medieval river, the Poddle, ran through the area.

Archaeologists have also found pieces of pottery artifacts from a later date.
The builders were planning to build four retractable umbrellas in the square to be used during outdoor events. The umbrellas were being constructed in preparation for the celebration of Temple Bar's 20th anniversary on July 15th to 24th.

These celebrations are now being postponed. The square is used all year round to host farmer's markets, cinema events, workshops and music events.

Woman woke up after sedative with new accent and a medical mystery

	ByKATE HICKEY, IrishCentral.com Editor

An Oregon woman's accent has been identified as a medical oddity. A year and a half ago the woman went to the dentist office to get a dental implant, when she left just hours later she had an Irish accent.

Butler’s case also has a striking similarity to that of Chris Gregory’s, from Yorkshire, Britain back in 2009. Having woken up in his hospital bed he began singing “Danny Boy” in an Irish accent even though he has never visited the country.

In his case the symptom only lasted for 30 minutes, as opposed to Butler’s which has been with her for almost two years.

The oldest man in Ireland has died at the age of 106 – Mick Fitzsimons is to be buried in the Cavan church he helped restore.

Fitzsimons, a carpenter by trade, died on Saturday at his son’s house in the village of Stradone where he lived all his life.

He was, until recent, in ‘perfect health’ and has celebrated his 106th birthday at the local Lavey Inn in February.

“He was a great man with a good sense of humour. He always had a smile and loved his shave,” Emma Crowe, one of Mr Fitzsimons’s carers, told the Irish Times.

	By CATHY HAYES,IrishCentral.com Staff Writer

Thousands of Irish lined up to see a replica of Kate Midddleton’s weddiing dress in a Belfast shopping mall over the weekend.

Shoppers at Belfast's Victoria Square complex flocked to view a copy of the already famous dress on Saturday, only one day after the wedding.

The replica was made by local designer Mary-Rose McGrath.

"It was a joint effort," she told UTV. "I've a really brilliant team and we all got together yesterday, sat down and the minute Kate stepped out we were sketching, starting to cut fabrics, it was all go.

"I thought she was absolutely magnificent, such a beautiful girl and a fantastic style, timeless, elegant and everything a princess should be."

Ireland is home to beautiful edifices spanning thousands of years. Its landscape is dotted with grand castles, towering churches and tall magnificent modern buildings.

	1. Obel Tower, Belfast
	85 m (279 feet)
This skyscraper was completed in 2010. It lies on the Donegall Quay on the river Langdon and contains 233 apartments.

	2. Windsor House, Belfast
	80 m (262 feet)
Long recognized as the tallest building in Ireland before the completion of the Obel Tower, this high rise was purchased by the building company P Elliot in 2007. This edifice, built in 1975, is in the process of being converted into a high end apartment building.

	3. Belfast City Hospital Tower, Belfast
	74 m (243 feet)
This modern yellow structure houses the largest general hospital in the United Kingdom. It was constructed in 1986.

	4. The Elysian, Cork
	71 m (233 feet)
Built in 2008 this mixed residential and commercial property looms large over the Cork skyline and has the distinction of being the tallest building in the Republic of Ireland. The Elysian is the second tallest building in all of Ireland as a spire brings it’s total height to 80 m.

 5. County Hall, Cork
	67 m (220 feet)
This office block houses the Cork administrative headquarters and is owned by the Cork City council. The County Hall, originally constructed in 1968, has been recently redeveloped as late as 2006 and is listed as a protected building.

	6. The Montevetro Building, Dublin
	67 m (220 feet)
Finished in 2010, this edifice was purchased by Google in 2011.

	7. Hilton Hotel, Belfast
	63 m (207 feet)
Lying on the bank of the Langan river, this towering hotel was completed in 1998.

	8. Millennium Tower, Dublin
	63 m (207 feet)
Put up in 1998, this construction is currently Dublin’s second tallest building behind the Montevetro building.

	9. BT Riverside Tower, Belfast
Serving as the headquarters for British Telecom for Northern Ireland this building was completed in 1998.

 10. Divis Tower, Belfast
This edifice, named after the nearby Divis mountains, houses 2400 people in 850 flats. The tower, built in 1968, is dubiously known as the place where the first child, 9-year-old Patrick Rooney, was killed in the troubles in 1969.

Twenty Irish novels to read before you die

Ireland, considering its size, has produced a disproportionately large amount of world renowned writers. From Joyce to Wilde and McGahern and Stoker here's IrishCentral's list of the top 20 Irish novel you should read before you die.

	1. James Joyce - "Ulysses" (1922)

"Ulysses" was first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920. It has been called one of the most important works of Modernist literature.

The novel chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, 16 June 1904.

	2. Oscar Wilde - "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1890)

This is the only published novel by Oscar Wilde. It first appeared as the lead story in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine on 20 June 1890, printed as the July 1890 issue of this magazine.

The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered a work of classic gothic horror fiction with a strong Faustian theme.

	3. James Joyce - "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (1916)

This semi-autobiographical novel describes the formative years of the life of Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter ego of Joyce and an allusion to the consummate craftsman of Greek mythology, Daedalus.

	4. John McGahern - "Amongst Women" (1990)

"Amongst Women" tells the story of Michael Moran, a bitter, ageing Irish Republican Army (IRA) veteran, and his tyranny over his wife and children, who both love and fear him. It is considered McGahern's masterpiece.

New Book celebrates the ongoing success of the Magnus Viking Association in Down District and looks forward to the future of the Delamont festival.

The Magnus Viking Association is one of the district’s major success stories. Manned by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, the group has been the driving force behind the district’s hugely successful international Viking festival which continues to go from strength to strength.

The local volunteers have reached a number of milestones since their launch and last weekend at the Down County Museum a new publication was unveiled.Blood of the Norse details the history of the Magnus Viking Association and the beautifully illustrated book charts the group’s rise in prominence since its formation in 2003.

Eight years ago, a group of Viking enthusiasts held a meeting at the English Street museum in Downpatrick to form the new association which takes its name from King Magnus Barelegs of Norway who is buried outside Downpatrick, close to the town’s railway museum.

The aim of the new group was to promote the Viking life and heritage in Strangford Lough and Down District and to network with other re-enactment groups, festival organisers, schools, film and television producers.

The new book contains details of the Magnus Viking Association’s active education programme which introduces students to Viking family life.

The publication reveals that the first education days were held ahead of the Barelegs festival in 2004. Since then, thousands of children have enjoyed the group’s living history programme.

And in the true pioneering spirit of the Vikings, distance poses no obstacle to the Association’s work, with volunteers taking the education programme to schools far and wide.

Most recently, the local Vikings travelled to Drumchor in Co. Louth where members worked with children from two primary schools and a group of students with special needs.

The new book also features the development of the annual Barelegs Festival over the past decade, with its highlights including the creation of a Viking village in the grounds of Delamont Country Park and a realistic battle re-enactment.

Here, there is also an opportunity for children and adults to learn Viking skills and sample what life was like in 825AD, while the annual Viking boat races across Killyleagh harbour continue to grow in popularity, attracting international competitors.

The theme of the festival at Delamont revolves around the last days of King Magnus which are played out on the shores of Strangford Lough in 1103, culminating in his violent death at the hands of Ulaid warriors.

Spectators are treated to dynamic displays of sword fighting, archery and hand-to-hand combat.

Blood of the Norse also contains photographs of the Viking village at Delamont and the harbour races in Killyleagh, along with a fascinating section on how the volunteers construct their own long boats.

There are also sections on the Association’s work on various television documentaries and the festival’s international attractions to people in Norway who are regular visitors to Killyleagh.

The publication of the new book was funded by the RU’s European Regional Development Fund through the Peace III programme delivered by the Down, Ards and North Down council cluster.

St. Patrick’s Trivia

With St. Patrick's Day approaching fast we thought we would provide some trivia on the Patron Saint of Ireland!

	Date of Birth:

St. Patrick's date of birth is unknown. Much debate surrounds the exact date or even year. Some historians believe it to be to towards the end of the fourth century approximately 389AD, other historians believe this date to be inaccurate and place his date of birth later at around 415AD.

St. Patrick's Day and the colour green:

Believe it or not, the colour of St Patrick was not actually green, but blue! The colour green has long been associated with St. Patrick and St. Patrick's Day. However, green has not always been associated with the Patron Saint of Ireland - at one time it was the colour blue. Studies into Saint Patrick show that his chosen colour on his coat of arms was actually blue, not green. Historians believe that up until the 1750’s, blue was the colour most associated with St. Patrick and the Irish people. After this time it was thought to have been replaced by green due to the popularity of green clothing and shamrocks.

	St. Patrick not Irish?

Saint Patrick has always been associated with Ireland, but he was not born in Ireland. He was actually born in Britain, reputedly in Wales. But he has become an integral part of the Irish heritage, mostly through his service across Ireland of the 5th century.

	Snakes...what snakes?

Pious legend credits St. Patrick with banishing snakes from Ireland, however all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. One suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids during that time and place, as exampled on coins minted in Gaul.

	Burial place:

St. Patrick is said to be buried at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down.
