Culhane’s Irish Pub - The Culhane Sisters

You've probably been to an Irish pub that wasn't very Irish, but that is not the case at Culhane's Irish Pub in Atlantic Beach. Culhane's is owned by four Irish sisters: Mary Jane, Aine, Lynda and Michelle Culhane, known around town as "The Sisters." This week The Recorder had the chance to sit down with three-fourths of "The Sisters" — turning "One of Us" into "Three of Us."

Where are you originally from?

Limerick, Ireland

What brought you to Atlantic Beach?

Mary Jane was relocated with her job at a mortgage company and the rest of us followed. We fell in love with Atlantic Beach. Southern people are very much like the Irish — very friendly.

How did the idea to open the pub come about?

We all have a passion for food and we love working together. We wanted something where we could work together and incorporate all of our personalities and The Beaches needed an authentic Irish pub.

The Food Network recently filmed at the pub, what was that like?

It was a dream come true. It was lovely to be recognized. Since they filmed we’ve seen a lot of new faces. We always had people coming in from the Beaches but now we’re having a lot of people coming from across the Intracoastal, that have heard about us. The show will be airing sometime in June.

How often do you visit Ireland?

We go back about twice a year. We were just there in September of last year for a big family reunion.

What’s the biggest difference between American beer and Irish beer?

The flavor, the history and the taste. When you go to Ireland you actually see a lot of people drinking American beers and vice-versa.

What is your favorite drink?

Guinness with a dash of blackberry liquer.

What is your favorite dish from the pub?

Mary Jane — The lamb sliders which were featured with Guy Fieri

What are your favorite bands?

The Cranberries, U2, The Coors. We like a lot of American music as well. When you live in Ireland you’re exposed to so many bands from all over the world.

When you aren’t visiting Ireland, where else do you like to go?

California, the Keys and the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. We already live in a vacation destination.

Where haven’t you been that you would like to go?

We’d like to go to Colorado and go skiing. None of us have every been skiing.

Do you have any favorite TV shows?

We like anything on The Food Network. We also enjoy Brothers and Sisters because we can releate to it.
