Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade Draws Huge Crowd
By Mike LaCrosse. 22.3.2010
The luck of the Irish was in the air in western Massachusetts Sunday as a sea of green lined the streets of Holyoke for the 59th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Thousands turned out for what is said to be a record setting year for attendance.
"Everyone is a little Irish on St. Patrick's Day and Holyoke has the best parade in the country," said Parade President James Leahy.
The Holyoke parade is the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the country behind New York City's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Massachusetts' Republican Sen. Scott Brown made the trip up from Washington D.C. for Sunday's big event.
"This is a gorgeous day and I am very excited to be here," said Brown.
The skies cleared for a better than expected forecast drawing more people than expect. However, Linda Moriarty of Wilbraham said the parade is something she never missed no matter what the weather is.
"We've been here in sleet. We've been here in rain. We've been here in wind and bitter cold so this is just a good day," said Moriarty.
There was over 40 different groups, floats and bands featured during Sunday's parade offering something for everyone.
