Legbiter Runners to take to the Streets in Killyleagh this weekend!

This coming Friday evening, 27th August, the roads of Killyleagh will see many runners from a number of clubs, schools and simply local enthusiasts compete in the town’s annual running event.  The Legbiter 5 mile challenge, aptly named by its sponsor Strangford Lough Brewing Company.

Last year the event had over 150 entries into the Legbiter Five Mile and schools challenge and organisers are hoping to welcome many new and returning runners to Killyleagh to compete for the 2010 titles.

Both the adult 'Legbiter Five Mile' and 'school challenge' events will start at the top of High Street and circuit the town. Registration for schools starts at 5.30pm and the five mile challenge registrations begin at 6pm.

The school challenge race begins at 6.30pm and local schools will compete against each other for the prestigious Junior and Senior Challenge Cups. The challenge requires 3 or more children from one school to enter the race and the fastest three times across the finish line in a better time than entrants from other schools will win the junior and senior schools cups. There is no maximum number of entrants per school, but the fastest three completed times will be counted to represent that school, (so be sure to encourage your class mates to run with you.)

The school challenge circuit takes runners around the centre of Killyleagh town and finishes with a very challenging hill climb. Last year Cumran Primary School took the Junior title home and Down High School won the Senior title.

Individual winners in the 6-11 and 12-16 age groups also take home a prize and last year Paul McMeekin from Downpatrick Primary School and Jack Walker from Grosvenor Grammar School were the overall winners in their age categories.

The Legbiter 5 mile challenge begins at 7.30pm, again from the top of High Street. Competitors in the Legbiter event leave the town and travel along a scenic route feathering open countryside and the shores of Strangford Lough before they return to the town centre. Last year saw over 110 entrants in the Legbiter race and it is hoped that many will return to compete for the title in the 2010 event.

There are 4 categories in the Legbiter event – Overall male winner, overall female winner, male veteran and female veteran. Last year the overall male winner was Alan McCullough who crossed the line in 25 minutes and 48 seconds. The winner of the Male Veteran category was Francis Marsh who finished the circuit in 26 minutes and 42 seconds. The overall female winner and winner of the female veteran category was Diane Wilson who crossed the line in 35 minutes and 12 seconds.

Early registration is recommended either at the Bridge Centre in Killyleagh from 6.30pm or by emailing Grace Lavery and Tracey Davies at info@slbc.ie with your name, date of birth and the class you wish to enter.

The organisers of both the Schools cup and Legbiter challenge events say they are delighted with the support provided by the Killyleagh Social Partnership and sponsorship provided by the Strangford Lough Brewing Company.
