New beer garden on National Ave, Milwaukee
Drive along W. National Ave., and you'll find some new-restaurant activity.
The Dubliner, the 2-month-old pub and restaurant at 124 W. National Ave. in Walker's Point, will open its beer garden on the west side of the building on May 1. That's the day it also will begin opening at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for a traditional Irish breakfast and a lunch menu.
The Dubliner is owned by Jerry Stenstrup, who also owns Steny's across the street. The chef at the restaurant is John Rutchik; diners might remember his cooking from the Pleasant Valley Inn in West Allis and the former Bark River Bistro in Hartland.
Irish-inspired comfort foods are the specialty. Stenstrup calls his smoke-free restaurant an Irish gastropub; it has some dishes diners would expect to find in a pub, such as potato skins ($6), but others go beyond the expected.
For example, there are Dubliner crab cakes ($12) of lump blue crab with shrimp and scallop mousse as an appetizer.
Sandwiches include curry grilled chicken breast with apple-fennel slaw ($7); among entrées is veal and Portobello mushroom meatloaf ($14) with onion gravy and mashed potatoes.
The kitchen is open 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday; the bar is open later. Parking is available in an adjacent lot.
