St. Paul’s Irish Fair, August 13-15

It is time to dust off those tartan plaids, as one of the most spirited gatherings of the summer is happening this weekend - St. Paul's Irish Fair. This event, now over 30 years-old, is taking place Friday through Sunday on Harriet Island, home to the fair since 2001. The Hot Dish spoke with Irish Fair's executive director, Sarah VanSickle, who gave us the scoop on all the fun to be had.

VanSickle recommended going the traditional route with food and drink--fish and chips, and beer--preferably a Guinness or Finnegan's. She expects a crowd of close to 100,000 people to attend, and she mentioned several new features worth a look, including the Fitzgerald Cup Piping Contest--a competition between several Minnesota Highland bagpipe bands, and the Song of Ireland Exhibit which documents the place of music in Irish history dating back over a century, with thousands of recordings and pieces of sheet music on display.

General admission to the festival is free, and proceeds benefit several Irish groups and new-immigrant groups. This year a hospitality tent has been added with separate admission. The Hot Dish also recommends the Best Legs in a Kilt contest, Saturday at 4:15.
